Otto

Brief

Otto can give more functionality to your home or bring softness to the workplace. Designed to respond to life that blends work lives and home.

Sponsorship project by Bernhardt Design

In a post -pandemic world, we are surrounded with back to office and work from home. As we create the new hybrid normal, Bernhardt Design wanted to design furniture that adapts to the workspace or home.

For comfort, the bottom of the back is made bulging.

Well-refined cushions and oak wood make your space soften.

The wood pieces bridge the back and the seat.

Dimension

The table can be pivoted by the user’s needs. It can be also used as armrest.

I spent a lot of time refining proportions, tuning the curvature, and variating the shape. I made the back cushion a little bit narrower than the seat because the back looked too wide visually. I wanted to make a table consistent with cushions.

Built all structural frames before handing them over to the upholsterer.

Process

02.

For the metal rod of the table, I decided to make it straight rather than flared out of shape during the manufacturing process because the flared one can only notice from the front side. Our eyes go down from top to bottom when we see the chair. I wanted to cut costs in the part that has less user attention.

Worked on small-scale cardboard mock-ups to study proportions, and a 3D-milled mock-up to see the more precise form.

03.

Communicated with the upholsterer to make it happen.

Finished metal and sanded wood and applied varnish.
