Filo
Filo is a lounge chair that interacts between negative and positive space.
It coexists with solid form and a sense of void. It fills up the space and creates an open interior.
Design for
Hem – Swedish for home – is a Stockholm-based independent design brand.
Adventurous
Brave
Create an iconic piece of a chair for the brand — designed to enhance users' space, embody their design goals, and give Hem a unique position in today’s marketplace.
Meet your Filo.
Solid sitting and sleek metal frame make perfect harmony. Metal frames from the back gently touch the ground.
For minimal and clean visual, mechanical elements are hidden. It has an elegant silhouette and delicate arm lines.
From the top view, Filo delivers iconic design language.
Process
I carefully thought about the interaction between positive and negative space, and how they could make harmony with each other.
I tested proportion with a small mock-up to refine and 3D printed to finalize.
I made a full-scale mock-up to explore proper proportion. It helped me to figure out sitting and arm height and how the back tube could change. I eventually changed the back tube line from an angular line to a smooth curved line.

Materials
The frame is made of recycled steel rod.
Plywood for the base is certified plywood from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).
An upholstery is covered with the post-consumer recycled wool of repurposed garments.
Steel is the most recycled material in the world. Steel is 100% recyclable. It can be recycled any number of times without loss of quality. It is one of the only materials that does not lose its properties when recycled.
It guarantees ethical manufacturing and ensures that the plywood is formaldehyde-free.
Fabrics
Hem has not only various choice of fabrics from the basic to tactile texture but also intriguing color palette.
Filo is a student project and it is not affiliated with the brand, Hem.
